School Teacher turns MGNREGA Worker in Rajasthan, Earns Rs 235 daily in Lockdown

A Jaipur based School Teacher Ramavtar Singh has turned MGNREGA worker during Lockdown. The School Teacher who used to earn Rs 20,000 at School in Jaipur now under the MGNREGA scheme getting Rs 250 daily wage. News Agency ANI reported on Thursday that Ramavtar Singh who worked as a teacher at a private school now works as a MGNREGA labourer under the MGNREGA scheme, due to COVID19 lockdown.

The Teacher turned MGNREGA worker Ramavtar said that many teachers like us who used to earn around Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 are now working here. As schools have been closed so we applied here, Ramavtar said during interaction.

Working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme has given us relief at this time of distress and we are thankful to the state govt for this. I used to earn Rs 20,000 per month and now I earn Rs 235 a day that sums up to Rs 7,050 per month, said Teacher turned MGNREGA worker Ramavtar Singh. After Central Government’s guidelines for daily wage workers State governments are directed to provide and promote MGNREGA scheme for the livelihood of poor people & stranded migrant workers during lockdown.

During the interaction with ANI, he expressed thankfulness toward Rajasthan State government which provided him the source of earning for him and his family livelihood during lockdown. Not only Ramavtar Singh, thousands of employees who used to work in industries / schools & other institutions after lockdown have moved on to other professions. The huge windup of small and medium level industries has occurred during the four phases of lockdown and lacs of workers are forced to change/ quit & abandoned from their employments, a financial report said.

Nationwide lockdown has turned into fourth phase and is extended till May 31, due to Covid pandemic. Allowing different commercial and industrial activities in its revised guidelines Ministry of Home Affairs is in constant touch with the states over situation on Coronavirus. In Rajasthan more than 7,000 Covid19 cases have been reported by Wednesday, 4457 people have been cured and 173 people have lost their lives in state, as per MoHFW data.
