The Constitution Day is being celebrated today, on November 26 across the country to mark the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constitution Assembly. Previously this day was celebrated as 'Law Day'. In October 2015, on the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar the Government of India decided to celebrate November 26 as 'Constitution Day' with an aim to promote constitutional values and thoughts of Dr. BR Ambedkar among the citizens. Since then it is being celebrated as ‘Samvidhan Diwas’ on the 26th of November every year.
After the country became independent from British Rule, the constituent Assembly entrusted a committee with the responsibility of drafting the Constitution of India. Dr. B.R was made the chairman of the committee while Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the President of the Constituent Assembly.
The first meeting of the constituent assembly was met on December 09, 1946. On December 11, 1946, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected as its President. While on August 29, 1947, the drafting committee was appointed, with Dr. BR Ambedkar as the chairman of the committee. On November 04, 1947 Draft Constitution was submitted while on 26th the drafting was completed.

On January 24, 1950, the handwritten Indian constitution was signed and then on January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution was legally enforced. The making of the Indian Constitution took a total of 2 years 11 months and 18 days. Approximately, 2000 amendments were made to it before it was finalized.
Apart from that, the Lion Capital of Ashoka was adopted as the national emblem on January 26, 1950, the day India was declared a republic with its Constitution coming into effect. Initially, the representation of Lion Capital of Ashoka was adopted as the emblem of the Dominion of India in December 1947.
