According to the official sources from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the reason behind the suspension of over 250 Twitter accounts/tweets is related to the violation of Section 69A of the Indian IT Act by the users during the Farmers' Protest that turned violent on the 26th of January.

Incitement to genocide is a grave threat to public order & therefore the Ministry of Electronics & IT ordered for blocking of these Twitter accounts & Tweets under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. Twitter has blocked these Tweets/Twitter Accounts, official sources told ANI.

According to the sources, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MEITY) directed the micro-blogging site Twitter to block those (around 250 Tweets/Twitter accounts) that were using the #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide hashtag & making fake, intimidatory & provocative Tweets on Jan 30.

This was done at the request of the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies to prevent any escalation of law and order in view of the on-going farmer agitation, Sources told ANI.
