Ministry of AYUSH is organising global Surya Namaskar demonstration programme today on January 14 on the occasion of Makar Sakranti. Approx. 75 lakh people to perform Surya Namaskar on Makar Sakranti. Registration for Surya Namaskar quiz and video contest is now open.

The Ministry of Ayush is conducting the global Surya Namaskar Demonstration programme on Friday, January 14, 2022, under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. The ministry is also organizing Suryanamaskar quiz and video contest for the enthusiasts. To participate in the event or quiz they have to register online at any of the portals- yoga.ayush.gov.in, yogacertificationboard.nic.in and 75suryanamaskar.com. The last date for registration is January 14.

The ministry is hopeful to see more than a crore people’s participation against the target of 75 lakh Surya Namaskar participants on the occasion of Makar Skranti that is on Friday. 

Earlier in a virtual press meet, Minister of AYUSH Shri Sarbananda Sonowal said that Surya Namaskar demonstration on Makar Sankranti is more relevant in the current resurgence of Covid-19. “It is a proven fact that Surya Namaskar builds up vitality and immunity and therefore is able to keep coronavirus at bay. ​​We have set a target of 75 lakh people participating in the programme, but seeing registration and our preparedness, I am hopeful of crossing the limit of one crore,” the Minister said.

Surya Namaskar programme is being organized as a part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. The theme for the event is “Surya Namaskar For Vitality".

All leading Yoga Institutes both from India and abroad, Indian Yoga Association, National Yoga Sports Federation, Yoga Certification Board, FIT India, and many other Government & Non-Government organizations are participating in this global program. Celebrities and Sports personalities have also been invited to promote Surya Namaskar through video messages. Players and staff of Sports Authority of India (SAI) is also participating in the programme.

Surya Namaskar Video Contest:

Through the video contest, MyGov invites people to share videos showcasing their families, friends or other groups performing Surya Namaskar. Format is open & original content have to be shot on mobile or cameras in Hindi/ English or any other language with English subtitles. Participants have to prepare a video up on "Surya Namaskar".

Participants and Yoga enthusiasts can register themselves on respective portals and will have to upload Videos of performing Surya Namaskar on 14th January. The registration links are available on respective websites and are widely distributed by the Ayush Ministry.

It may be noted that the last date for participating in the Surya Namaskar video contest is January 31, 2022. The best videos will be showcased on social media handles. A wide range of digital resources is already available in the public domain to learn and teach Surya Namaskar. The same may be seen on the websites and social media handles of MDNIY, MoAyush and other major yoga organizations or Institutions.

About Surya Namaskar: Surya Namaskar is a set of asanas in a combination of 12 steps. These steps comprise 8 asanas in which 4 asanas are repeated. All the 12 steps are to be done in a chronological manner in order to complete the process of one round of Surya Namaskar.
