Republic Day 2022: India celebrates its 73rd Republic Day on January 26th, 2022. The former British colony adopted its own constitution prepared by members of the Constituent Assembly on this day. India's Constitution was established on January 26, 1950, as the country emerged from a brutal colonial past. The Indian constitution, on the other hand, was first adopted on November 26, 1949. Constitution Day is observed on November 26.
The Constituent Assembly was the body tasked with drafting India's Constitution. It met for the first time on December 9, 1946, with 207 members in attendance, including nine women.
The assembly had 389 members at first, but after independence and India's partition on August 15, 1947, the number was reduced to 299.

The Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, at the end of the last session of the Constituent Assembly. However, it was only two months later, on January 26, 1950, that it went into effect, thanks to the signatures of 284 members.
Since the Indian National Congress (INC) proclaimed the Declaration of Indian Independence in 1930, January 26 has been designated as India's Republic Day. The date was chosen because Congress passed the Poorna Swaraj resolution on this day. The resolution also signaled the start of a large-scale anti-colonial political movement across the country.
