Three photographers from India have received the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Kashmir Valley. All three are residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Yasin Dar, Mukhtar Khan, and Channi Anand, who have captured the situation after the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, have received the Pulitzer Feature Photography Award. All three work for the Associated Press (AP) news agency.
Anand lives in Jammu, while Yasin and Mukhtar are residents of Srinagar. Channu Anand has been working with AP for the past 20 years. These prestigious awards were announced late at night. Along with the normal life of the valley, these three also took pictures of protesters and security forces around the world.
Upon winning the award, Anand said: 'I am surprised. I can not believe it. On 5 August last year, the Government of India withdrew Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. The closure in Kashmir saw a radical curfew and there was no internet access for months. Covering the tense climate in Kashmir was obviously a difficult task, and the photographers had to take refuge in strangers' houses and hide their cameras in vegetable bags. 'It was always cat and mouse,' Yasin told The Associated Press on Monday.
