A month and a half after the debut of 83, a new film, Badhaai Do, hits theatres. With theatres reopening across the country, albeit with a distributed occupancy rule and night curfews, it isn't a complete reopening. Still, given that the Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar picture is a mid-budget production that doesn't require a bumper or a blockbuster launch, it isn't really an issue.
Having said that, the picture has seen a good number of theatres and screens for itself because it is the only Bollywood release and there are few other options available to be screened. Even in these places, however, one should not expect houseful signs on the first day, as this is a word-of-mouth film. Furthermore, because of the LGBTQ topic, the reach is already limited, at least to begin with.

The good news is that the trailer of the film promises entertainment, at least for its target population, and so if word of mouth after the first day is positive, the weekend could see significant increases. This used to be the case for such films prior to the pandemic. Badhaai Do Day 1 box office collection report is given here.
Fri | Day 1 (Feb 11) | ₹1.6 Cr (approx) |
Total | ₹1.6 Cr (approx) |
The main difference is that films like Badhaai Do used to open around ₹3 crores, whereas the current situation suggests an ₹1-2 crores opening. The film's production team may be well aware of this and prepared for what comes next at the box office.
