The Festival of Dussehra will come to an end tomorrow on Sunday, October 25. The festival is also known as Vijayadashami. It is celebrated as a sign of victory of positivity over negativity. Vijayadashami has made up of two words, Vijay which means win or victory, and Dashami which means 10. This represents the victory of Lord Ram over ten-headed Ravan.
According to Ramayan, Dussehra is celebrated because Lord Ram killed ten-headed Ravan who kidnapped Sita and brought her to his Lanka. Dashmi represents the tenth day when Lord Ram got victory over Ravan while Meghnath and Kumbhakaran being brothers of Ravan are burnt with him as well.
Dussehra comes up with a nine-day long Navratri festival where people praise Maa Durga. Navratri is celebrated across the country and on the 9th day of Navratri, women invite nine little girls and feed them with food. 9 girls are invited because Maa Durga has 9 forms and they are treated as 9 roops of Maa Durga.
Navratri is celebrated because once the great battle took place between Maa Durga and the most powerful demon Mahishasura. The demon Mahishasura was blessed to be immortal and live forever by Lord Brahma under a condition that he can only be killed by a powerful woman.
Being overconfident with the blessing of the immortality of Lord Brahma, Mahishasura attacked the Trilok which are earth, heaven and hell. Since only strong women could kill him, the problem relied on the shoulder of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva to help them defeat Mahishasura.
Lord Vishnu took a decision to create a woman to defeat Mahishasura, Lord Shiva who is also known as the most powerful god who can create and destruct the world anytime. Everyone went to him for help and Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma put all their powers in a woman which lord Vishnu has created to kill the demon Mahishasura. The woman created is known as Aadhi Shakti who is also the wife of Lord Shiva, another avatar of her is Parvati who runs through the universe to protect it from all the demons.
