Violance cases against Women increasing amid Lockdown, 587 cases registered: NCW

Amid this lockdown, the country is witnessing increased number of crimes against women. The 21 day lockdown has proved to be disastrous for women as the number of heinous crimes against them including domestic violence, sexual harassment, molestation cases are rising day by day. Women in India were already at distinctions and during lockdown the increase in number of violance cases against women has shown women are also not safe inside their own homes, it has been proved in lockdown, said NCW. Staying at homes is helping them to battle against coronavirus but they are mentally depressed because of men resorting to such atrocious acts & this sharp increase in violence cases has proven this. NCW has registered 587 cases of violence against women during lockdown.

A total of 587 complaints have been registered with National Commission for Women from March 23 to April 16 out of which 239 are related to domestic violence.According to data shared by the NCW, 123 cases of domestic violence were received between February 27 and March 22. In the last 25 days, the Commission received 239 more such complaints. In recent case a visually impaired women in Bhopal whose family members are stuck in Rajasthan, raped by unknown, became recent crime in this row.

NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma earlier said that the high number can be attributed to the lockdown imposed due to the coronavirus outbreak which has locked the abuser and the victim together. The highest number of cases registered were regarding domestic violence. A number 72177135372  has been launched by NCW to report any cases of domestic violence on an emergency basis.

A special team has been constituted to look into the matter. Since the launch of this dedicated WhatsApp number, a total of 40 messages were received reporting domestic violence, said NCW.

Being 24-hours together makes women an easy target. And the other factor is, that today she cannot go out and get any kind of remedy. Earlier, for people who use to be abusive or violent, there was some kind of pressure because the woman could always walk out and go to the police. But now, she cannot, and the abusive person knows this. And so, this encourages him, to be violent without any consequences. The nonavailability of liquor also plays a role as the addicts become more abusive. Women today are in the most vulnerable situation. Mariam Dhawale, General Secretary, All India Democratic Women’s Association said.
