Ganesh Chaturthi 2022: History & Reason For Celebration

According to Hindu beliefs, Goddess Parvati used sandalwood paste to conjure Ganesha to keep watch over her as she bathed while Lord Shiva was abroad. They quarreled because Ganesha forbade Lord Shiva from going into the room where she was bathing.

Due to his mother's wishes, Ganesha, an obedient son, prevented Lord Shiva from entering the hall. Lord Shiva was so furious that he tore Ganesha's head off of his body. When Goddess Parvati became aware of this, she transformed into her Kali avatar and threatened to destroy the universe as an act of vengeance.

The mother must be looking away from Lord Shiva in order for him to retrieve the head of a sleeping child, according to the orders he gave to his followers. To try to calm Parvati's rage, this was done. The first head found by Lord Shiva's followers belonged to a baby elephant. Lord Shiva joined his head to his body, giving Ganesha a second chance at life. Since then, according to Hindu Beliefs, that day is commemorated as Ganesh Chaturthi yearly.
