Gumraah

'Gumraah' is an official remake of the Tamil film 'Thadam', which follows an investigation into a murder where the two suspects in the case look the same. Seeing the growing popularity of South Cinema, in the North Belt, the big production houses are opting for the Hindi remake of superhit South Indian films instead of going with an original script.

The Tamil version of the story was commercially successful and became one of the highest-grossing films of the year in Tamil Nadu. the movie has also been remade in Telugu as 'Red' with Ram Pothineni in the lead role. Gumraah got released today 7th April 2023, at the theatres where the actors play a double roles, check out the Gumraah movie review in this article.

Gumraah Movie Review: Synopsis

The story of Gumraah begins with an investigation into a homicide, Isnpector Shivani Mathur discovers the prime suspect has a lookalike and the evidence point to both of them. Things turn complicated when secrets related to the case unravel, Who is the real killer and will Shivani played by Mrunal Thakur can solve the case?

Gumraah is a compelling crime drama that needs to have twists, suspense and drama, though the movie has ample of that unfold interestingly throughout the narrative. The film is a remake of the Tamil blockbuster hit film Thadam 2019. Vardhan Ketkar who has directed this venture skillfully engages the audience from the opening scene when a murder is committed to the end when the mystery unravels.

The whodunnit becomes more intriguing since the investigating officer, Shivani Mathur (Mrunal Thakur), needs to figure out the real culprit from two doppelganger suspects, Arjun Saigal and Ronnie (Aditya Roy Kapur).

To complicate this tale, Vardhan Ketkar with Aseem adds layers that are supremely inconsequential to the story. A hammy, Ronit Roy, hates one of Aditya Roy Kapur, Arjun, because he helped his daughter elope. While this is a very convenient reason, it doesn’t serve much to the main story. Talking of convenience, it is the favourite word of this product that only looks for routes that are easy.

Gumraah Movie Review: Star Performance

Aditya Roy Kapur is earnest in playing both the characters and tries to make you feel how they are starkly different from each other with his performance. From the goody-two-shoes romantic boy to the womaniser con artist, who loves those close to him dearly, he lends markedly different characteristics to each.

Mrunal Thakur and Ronit Roy as Shivani and ACP Yadav have to do the bare minimum. Their talents are underutilised and there was not much meat given to the characters for the actors to play around with. Ronit Roy is still stuck in time and continues to be that father from Udaan. He was phenomenal in that Vikramaditya Motwane directorial, but somehow all his work beyond that has been the same, and it has kind of started bothering.

Vedika Pinto plays Janhvi, Arjun’s girlfriend, a film reviewer looking for a ‘home wali feeling’ in Gurgaon. Her performance could have been better.

Gumraah Movie Review: Final Words

Gumraah takes a practical approach; earlier detective dramas like CID were better at developing suspenseful stories. The picture stumbles because it tries to cram in too much to lengthen the runtime when it should be tight and focused on the task at hand.

The actors also merely follow the script. The title doesn't exactly suit, and worse, it makes cinema buffs think of the three previous Gumraah films, at least two of which could be remade for more enjoyable viewing.
