The State Government on Thursday suspended two teachers for teaching U for Ugly to pre-primary students from a book itself adopted by School. The report came from East Bardhaman district of West Bengal where teachers had been teaching U for Ugly from unauthorized English alphabet book the school adopted. In the controversial book teachers used to taught “U for Ugly” with reference to a black boy printed next to the letter in the book.
Sources said that even though the schools are now closed due to the lockdown, the matter came to highlight when the father of a student of the school was teaching him at home with this book. He informed the other parents and was then informed to the Education Department. Taking the action against the English Teachers over controversial U for Ugly remark, two Teachers suspended from the School, source said.
English School Teachers of the School who used to teach from the same controversial English alphabet book carrying an insulting portion to the dark-colored people, have been suspended. However the book doesn't recommended by State Education Board, Minister himselft clarified.
According to the report U for Ugly with black boy printed next (a clear sign of racial discrimination) was being taught in the School of East Bardhaman district before Covid19 lockdown. In this book, the next (Ugly) word is written with explanation with images related to the letters to the students. The picture printed next to the U for Ugly letter is of a dark-colored boy.
On Thursday West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters, "This book is not part of the textbooks specified by the West Bengal Education Department. The school itself has included this book”. We will not tolerate any racial act or angle which establishes prejudice in the mind of the students”, he said.
