According to recent reports, a Chinese CPEC operative and another man have been attacked in Karachi province of Pakistan on Tuesday. As per reports, Unidentified gunmen opened fire at a CPEC operative and Chinese citizen in Karachi.
This incident is not the first time that an attack has been carried out at a CPEC operative, previously many attacks of similar nature have taken place.
Just a day ago, On Monday, Unidentified gunmen attacked a vehicle carrying security forces, killing two personnel of the Pakistan Navy and injuring another in the coastal district of Gwadar in the restive Baluchistan Province.
Reports suggest that the increasing attacks could be a result of growing Chinese influence in the Balochistan region which has led to widespread oppression of the local Baloch population by Pak authorities.
The local Baloch population has been against Pakistan's CPEC project since its inception as it has led to a massive influx of Chinese Population in the area, which has further deprived Baloch people of their own resources, hence rendering the area in a dismal state.
The attack on Chinese nationals could be seen as a message from Baloch freedom fighter outfits to Pakistani authorities.
China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a collection of infrastructure projects that are under construction throughout Pakistan since 2013. Originally valued at $47 Billion, the value of CPEC projects is worth $62 Billion as of 2020.
