The Woman King is based on the true account of the Agojie, an all-female military group that defended the Dahomey kingdom in West Africa from the 17th to the 19th centuries. The action movie, which is set in the 1820s, depicts Davis as a general who prepares the following generation of soldiers to take on their foes. The Woman King box office day 1 advance booking, total screen count, opening day collection details & latest updates about the movie are given here.

The historical saga "The Woman King," starring Viola Davis, will make its North American debut in 3,700 theatres this weekend, following an ecstatic global premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The domestic movie office needs a lift badly, but will American audiences be as receptive as Canadian ones?

Sony's "The Woman King," dubbed the "Black Panther of real life," hopes to earn at least $15 million in its domestic opening. Independent box office analysts are hopeful that first weekend earnings will top $18 million. However, Sony, who co-financed the film with eOne, is estimating $12 million, in line with the 2018, Davis-starring film "Widows." Given that "The Woman King" costs $50 million, it would be difficult to duplicate those ticket sales.

Competition With Pearl

When Pearl opens in 2,900 theatres this weekend, the film is aiming for low single-digit box office numbers. It is the director Ti West's follow-up to "X," which made $4.2 million in its theatrical debut earlier this year. Despite only earning $11 million at the box office, the movie seems to have struck a chord because A24 has approved two sequels. There will be a double feature of "X" and "Pearl" on Thursday in more than 140 theatres, including Alamo Drafthouse.
