After a decade, the movie marked Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's return to Tamil cinema. Aishwarya plays two characters: Nandini and Mandakini Devi, her silent mother. Following its release, Aishwarya's performance was lauded by both the general public and the reviewers.
In a recent interview, Mani Ratnam expressed his gratitude for being able to split the movie into two parts and release it now, when people are more prepared to watch a multi-part movie. Ponniyin Selvan was an attempt made by Mani Ratnam in 1994 and 2011, but neither time the project was successful.
