Chandrayaan 2 Vikram Lander Found ! NASA's Lunar Camera Spotted Debris

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera on December 3 released for the first time, has indicated the debris of Vikram, the Chandrayaan-2 lander that hard-landed on Moon on 7th September. NASA in its recent statement said: “Vikram lander found” specifying an image of Moon with blue and green dots show the impact point of Vikram and an associated debris field with S indicating Shanmuga Subramanian.

Vikram Lander Found

After receiving tip, the NASA’s LROC team confirmed the identification of “Vikram Lander” by comparing before and after images. The Vikram Lander Debris firstly located by Shanmuga Subramaniam and indicated with “S”. The location of “S”is about 750 meters northwest of the main crash site and was a single bright pixel identification in that first mosaic (1.3 meter pixels, 84° incidence angle) as per Report.

Lunar Reconnaissance Orbitar Camera team released the first mosaic (acquired September 17) of the site on September 26 and many people, including Subramanian, have downloaded the mosaic to search for signs of Vikram Lander launched by ISRO as part of Chandrayaan 2 Mission.

  • Green dots indicate spacecraft debris.

  • Blue dots locate disturbed soil, likely where small bits of the spacecraft churned up the regolith

  • "S" indicates debris identified by Shanmuga Subramanian

While the NASA statement does not elaborate on Subramanian's identity, it says he had contacted the LRO project with a positive identification of debris.

As per NASA’s LROC team who after scouring the surrounding area in these new mosaics found the impact site in- (70.8810°S, 22.7840°E, 834 m elevation) and associated debris field. The November mosaic had the best pixel scale (0.7 meter) and lighting conditions (72° incidence angle)," the statement added.

Later after finalizing data NASA on early 3rd December said: "Vikram lander found." Unfolding an image of Moon with blue and green dots show the impact point of Vikram and an associated debris field.
