In Handwara, Jammu and Kashmir five Army & Jammu Kashmir Police personnel including Colonal and Major rank Officers martyred. In an encounter broke out in Handwara on Saturday, five defence personnel including Colonal Ashutosh Sharma martyred. According to Indian Army officials Team of 21 RR had entered the house of a civilian to prevent a hostage situation when they came under attack from terrorists who had already reached there 4 Armymen & a Sub Inspector of Jammu and Kashmir Police lost their lives. However after the ancounter the Civilians stuck in the house in Handwara were also safely evacuated, said Indian Army Officials.
According to Govt officials, 4 Indian Army personnel incl the Commanding Officer, Major of 21 Rashtriya Rifles unit along with 2 soldiers & one Jammu and Kashmir Police jawan have lost their lives in an encounter in Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir. Two terrorists also have been killed in the encounter, broke on Saturday.
As ANI reported, Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Commanding Officer of 21 Rashtriya Rifles unit lost his life in an encounter yesterday with terrorists in Handwara area of Jammu and Kashmir. He had been part of several successful counter-terrorist operations in the past.
On Saturday A team comprising of 5 Army and JK Police personnel entered the target area occupied by terrorists to evacuate the civilians. The team of Army and JK Police entered the area and successfully extricated the civilians: Army Spokesperson on Handwara Operation. Based on the intelligence input that terrorists were taking the civilian inmates of a house in Changimulla, Handwara of Kupwara district hostage, a joint operation was launched by Army and JK Police, said Army Spokesperson on Handwara Operation in Jammu & Kashmir.
During the process, Operation team was subjected to a heavy volume of fire by terrorists. In the ensuing firefight, 2 terrorists were eliminated & team of 5 Army & JK personnel comprising of 2 Army officers, 2 Indian Army soldiers & 1J&K Police Sub Inspector attained martyrdom.
