In view of this, the United Nations celebrates World Oceans Day i.e. World Oceans Day on 8 June every year, with the aim of creating awareness among the people about the importance of the oceans, increasing pollution, its dangers and the protection of the sea.
World Ocean Day is celebrated on a different theme every year to spread awareness about conservation of oceans and the theme of World Ocean Day 2020 is 'Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean'.
World Ocean Day provides an opportunity to pay respect to oceans, know their importance and take necessary steps for their conservation. The Government of Canada proposed the establishment of World Ocean Day during the Earth Conference held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. After this, the United Nations recognized in December 2008 to officially celebrate World Ocean Day on 8 June. Since then, World Ocean Day is celebrated every year on 8 June.

The purpose behind celebrating this day every year is to make people aware of the importance of the oceans, how the oceans play their important role in things like food security, biodiversity, ecological balance. With the development of countries, the speed of contamination of the oceans is increasing at an equally rapid rate. The oceans are slowly becoming dirty due to plastic pollution falling in the oceans. This also adversely affects the health of marine organisms. They mistakenly think of plastic as their food, forcing them to lose their lives.
About 30 percent of the world's population lives in coastal areas and their life is completely dependent on it. Apart from this, the contribution of oceans in speeding up the economy of many countries of the world is not hidden from anyone. Petroleum also receives many resources from the vast ocean. According to an estimate, the sea is home to about 1 million species of animals. Apart from this, the oceans also play an important role in providing information about the changes in climate and climate change, so it is the responsibility of each one of us to protect them.
