Railway permits women to travel by Special Suburban trains in Chennai: Report

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday makes the announcement, allowing women to travel by Special Suburban services in Chennai. The women will be allowed to travel by Suburban trains in Chennai during non-peak hours on the weekdays and throughout the day on Sundays.

Southern Railway permits lady passengers during the non-peak hours in Chennai from 23rd of November. Scaling up the suburban services in Chennai area to 244 trains per day, Railways decides to resume services in Chennai allowing women to travel by Suburban Special trains. Childrens upto the Age of 12 years accompanying lady passengers are also allowed to travel during non-peak hours.

"From 23rd November, Railways permits women to travel by Special Suburban Services in Chennai during non-peak hours on weekdays and throughout the day on Sundays. This will greatly benefit women passengers, making their travel safe, easy & convenient", tweets Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

To cater the needs of essential services staff of both government and other organizations it is now decided to permit, from 23-11-2020 onwards the lady passengers (who are not coming under the category of essential services staff) to travel in Chennai suburban trains during the non-peak hours from Monday to Saturday and to travel throughout the day on Sundays, notice reads.

Lady passengers (who are not coming under the category of essential services staff), should not commence their journey from 07.00- 10.00 hours and again from 16.30- 19.30 hours on all working days from Monday to Saturday.

Lady passengers are allowed to travel either by purchasing season tickets or on purchase of single journey tickets. Single journey tickets can be purchased by lady passengers at the boarding stations, notice adds.

In its appeal Souther Railway appeals all the passengers using suburban train services to follow all the CoVID protocols issued from time to time by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, Government of Tamil Nadu.
