Every year on Magh Purnima, Sant Ravidas Jayanti is honored, and this year it is being observed across the country today. This year marks the 645th birthday of the legendary saint Ravidas, who is famed for his contributions to the Bhakti movement.
His devotional melodies and verses, also known as Raidas, Rohidas, and Ruhidas, had a long-lasting impact on the Bhakti Movement. Ravidas Jayanti is particularly celebrated in North India, particularly in Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab.
Around 40 of the poetry attributed to Ravidas were incorporated in the Adi Granth, Sikhism's sacred scripture. Ravidas is widely believed to have met Nanak, the first Guru, and founder of the Sikh tradition. Sant Ravidas was born into a poor family in Seer Goverdhanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in the 14th century.He was among the first to use his poetry and spiritual teachings to criticise the Indian caste system and spread the concept of equality. He was Sant Kabir's close friend and pupil, and he contributed 41 devotional poems and melodies to the Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Ravidas is regarded as the Ravidasia religion's founder. Guru Ravidas was also known as Meera Bai's spiritual guru, who is a well-known figure in Hindu spiritualism.
To mark the occasion, the poem 'Amritbani Guru Ravidas Ji' is recited aloud and a special aarti is done by the devotees. On this day, devotees bathe in the holy river. Prayers are also offered in Guru Ravidas' temples, particularly in the bhawans. Shri Guru Ravidas Janam Asthan Mandir hosts the greatest festival.
