Guru Nanak Jayanti 2021 Date & Significance

 Every year on the full moon day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, the birth anniversary of the first Guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev is celebrated. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born on Kartik Purnima in Sri Nankana Sahib, Pakistan. Bhajans, Kirtans are held in all Gurdwaras on Guru Parv and Prabhat Pheris are also taken out.

Guru Nanak History

Born on Kartik Purnima, Guru Nanak Dev is considered an inspiring example of universal harmony. His personality encompasses all the qualities like a philosopher, yogi, householder, religious reformer, social reformer, patriot. Guru Nanak Dev Ji laid the foundation of the Sikh sect to remove superstition, hatred, discrimination spread in society.

He started the langar tradition to increase mutual love and brotherhood in society. In this, people of all castes and sects sit together and eat food. Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized 'Nirgun Upasana' and propagated it only. He did not worship nor believe in idols. "God is One, He is Almighty, He is the Truth" in this, he had complete faith.

  • The entire text of the Sikh religious book 'Guru Granth Sahib' is recited non-stop.
  • The Guru Granth Sahib is decorated with flowers on the day of the main event.
  • The Guru Granth Sahib is placed on a palanquin and is taken in procession throughout the village or town.
  • The 'Panj Pyare' represents this procession.
  • The Sikh flag representing the Nishan Sahib, or his element, also moves along.
  • Guruvani is recited during the entire procession.
