Government of Delhi on Wednesday issued the guidelines to reduce the weight of school bags for students of primary, secondary and senior secondary schools. Delhi Govt under its School Bag Policy 2020 recommended to keep the maximum bag weight of 3.5 to 5 kg.
According to the guidelines students of Class XI to XII can keep a bag weighted 3.5 to 5 Kg. Students of class IX and X 2.5 kg to 4.5 kg. Students of Pre-Primary level are exempted from carrying the bag.
"Heavy school bags are a serious threa to the health and well being of the students. These have adverse Physical effects on the growing children which can cause damage to their vertebral column and knees", Directorarate of Education said writing a letter to the school principals.

Earlier, Govt hinted to reduce the weight of school bags. "New School Bag policy to be implemented by Delhi Govt. Weight of school bags to be reduced", an official statement of Delhi Government reads. The Ministry of Education had notified the New school bag policy 2020 last month which is in line with the new National Education Policy (NEP).
