CDS Bipin Rawat Dead: According to the Indian Air Force, a military chopper carrying Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat and 13 others crashed shortly after takeoff today in Tamil Nadu. 14 bodies were discovered near the crash site, 13 people were confirmed dead earlier. Narendra Modi wrote, "I am deeply anguished by the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu in which we have lost Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife and other personnel of the Armed Forces. They served India with utmost diligence. My thoughts are with the bereaved families."

General Rawat had flown from Delhi to Sulur earlier today, and the flight manifest listed nine passengers. Five more people, possibly crew, were on the flight from Sulur.The crash occurred in the Nilgiris shortly after the Russian-made Mi-17 V5 helicopter took off from the army base in Sulur, Coimbatore, bound for the Defence Staff Services College in Wellington.

The crash was first reported around 12:20 P.M. Bipin Rawat's wife was also declared dead soon after she was taken to the hospital. 14 people were on board the military helicopter that crashed between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu. They included CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat, Brig LS Lidder, Lt Col Harjinder Singh, NK Gursewak Singh, NK Jitendra Kr, L/ Naik Vivek Kumar, L/Naik B Sai Teja, and Hav Satpal.
