ICC World Cup 2019: IND vs AFG, Unbeaten India takes on bottom-placed Afghanistan in Southampton

Highlights:

  1. India are undefeated in the World Cup - they have won 3 matches while one was washed out
  2. Afghanistan have lost all their 5 matches so far in the World Cup
The 28th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will be played between India and Afghanistan at Ageas Bowl in Southampton today. After being crushed by one of the dominant teams in their previous match, Afghanistan now face perhaps the most clinical team at ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 which is India.
Virat Kohli-led Indian cricket team are yet to lose a game in this tournament. Kohli is unlikely to make any change in the side excluding the obvious replacement of an injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Mohammad Shami is set to play his first game of the tournament against Afghanistan. In the press conference, all-rounder Vijay Shankar declared himself fit to play after an injury scare in practice session struck a yorker by Jasprit Bumrah.
On the other side, Gulbadin Naib-led Afghanistan cricket team are yet to register their first victory in the tournament. Naib look satisfied with his team's batting effort in the previous match. He is unlikely to make any changes to the batting order. Rashid Khan had a hard time in the previous game giving 110 runs from 9 overs but he will be a key bowler against India along with Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman as the three spinners have played against most in the IPL. Also, Afghanistan cricket team management might choose one between their pacers Hamid Hassan and Dawlat Zadran for this match against India.

Points Table standings: Indian cricket team standing at 4th spot while Afghanistan cricket team are yet to register their first victory in the tournament and they are placed at the bottom in the points table right now.

Pitch Report: Teams batting second have won both the games so far in the tournament on this pitch. But the conditions seem to be quite different here, with the sun over the head will benefit the batsmen. So both teams are looking at the dry conditions in Southampton, captains winning the toss would look to bat first.

Weather forecast: The days leading up to the game have not seen too much rain, and the forecast for the game is good throughout the day. Temperature should reach 20 degrees Celsius by 4 pm and there will be a light breeze from the South.

Head to head: The 2019 edition is just Afghanistan's second cricket World Cup ever and it has never faced two-time champion India at the tournament. However, India leads the head-to-head 1-0 in two ODIs, 1-0 in one test and 2-0 in two T20Is against Afghanistan.

Team News: India will be without opener Shikhar Dhawan who has been replaced by Rishabh Pant. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also picked up a minor injury in the last game and will most likely be replaced by Mohammad Shami in the playing XI.

Prediction:
India have been in dominant form at the ICC World Cup 2019 so far winning all of their three matches with one game washed out while Afghanistan come into this game on a five-match losing streak. It should be a fairly easy victory for India.

Facts:

  • 104 more runs for Virat Kohli to reach 20,000 international runs. He will be the 12th batsman to this landmark and the 3rd Indian after Sachin Tendulkar (34,357 runs) and Rahul Dravid (24,208 runs)
  • This is the Afghanistan's longest losing streak in ODIs. They have lost their last 5 ODIs on the trot.
  • Average 1st innings score at this venue in the last 5 ODIs is 286.

Players to watch out for
Virat Kohli (IND) - The Indian skipper went past Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest player to reach 11,000 ODI runs and is now on the edge of becoming the fastest to 20,000 international runs. He needs just 104 runs to reach this landmark and will be eager for his first century of this tournament.
Rashid Khan (AFG) - The spinner was taken to the cleaners against England in the last game finishing with the worst-ever bowling figures at the World Cup. He conceded 110 runs in 9 overs without taking any wickets. Rashid will have a lot to prove against India.
