Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) is working towards raising funds for the support staff and employees at the Institute to help them in emergencies that may arise due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the tagline 'You and I can help', the institute has started its own help portal named, 'IIT Madras Employee Distress Fund.'
Inspired by the PM CARES fund, the Institute has taken this initiative to come forth and extend financial assistance to the warriors serving at the Institute. Institute has collected 27.25 L as donations from its alumni and other individual and organizations. It is eyeing to get a donation of 1 Crore to help its needy employees in challenging times like this.
"For a huge system like IIT Madras to function smoothly, its employees and staff are very crucial. It is a collective effort of over 1500 employees that keep the system running. Though the majority of our employees are covered under basic medical insurance policies, there are employees who cannot afford unexpected medical emergencies during these times. In addition, several contract employees may not be covered for COVID-19 related medical expenses.
To address this need, it is proposed to raise a COVID-19 Employee Distress Fund of Rs. 1 Crore to help deserving employees in need." an official statement by IIT Madras, reads.
