Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and IIT Bombay are among the World’s top 50 Institutions list recently released by QS. QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) a unit providing services, analysis and insight of global higher education sector on Wednesday released World University ranking in several subjects, areas and fields. QS World University Rankings is an annual publication and on Wednesday released ranking brought several Indian premiere Institutes in World’s top 100. Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) secured 44th and 47th positions respectively in Engineering and Technology field.
As per the latest QS rankings, IIT Delhi moving massive 14 places from last year's 61st position, secured 47th position where on other hand IIT Bombay improved 9 places in its last year ranking and moved to 44th in worldwide ranking.
QS Unit on Wednesday released the World University rankings 2020 subject/ field wise. In recent annual ranking IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi secured 44th and 47th positions respectively in E&T category. Indian Institutes of Technology in Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Roorkee, the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are among the few institutions whose ranking improved to last year’s as per QS ranking. In rankings 2020 QS ranked total 1,368 institutions across 48 subjects in 5 broad categories across 159 locations. According to ranking list QS top 3 Institutes are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and University of Cambridge. Out of a maximum of 100 points criteria set by QS Institutes are being ranked annually.
Across all subjects, 165 institutions were considered from India, 441 from the United States, 502 from UK, Germany & France combined, and 360 from China, Japan and South Korea combined for this QS Rankings 2020 by subject area.
IIT Bombay on 44th (QS Ranking 2020)
Speaking on the QS ranking 2020 Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay said- ‘Our students and faculty members are our key strength. It is their dedication and the hard work that has got us where we are today. I am sure they will take us much further in the near future.
Other Indian technological and engineering institutes like IIT Kharagpur (86), IIT Madras (88) and IIT Kanpur (96) found their places in top 100 of this category.
The overall score of IIT Bombay is 49.4 out of 100.
IIT Delhi on 47th (QS Ranking)
Speaking on IIT Delhi securing 47th position in QS World University rankings in Engineering & Technology category, Prof V Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi said- ‘We are very happy to see a significant improvement in our rankings this year. This is a result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the Institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years.
The overall score of IIT Delhi in this category is 81.4, a statement from the Institute said.
Earlier IIT Delhi, recognised as the Institution of Eminence (IoE) by the Government of India in 2018. IoE status has given a greater autonomy to IIT Delhi in various hiring foreign faculty and starting collaborations with foreign institutions.
