A supplementary charge-sheet was filed by the Delhi Police this Saturday against Sharjeel Imam for the December 2019 riots.
Sharjeel Imam charge-sheeted for giving seditious speech & abetting riots in Jamia on 15th December 2019, said Delhi Police.
On Saturday (18 April, 2020) Delhi Police stated that charge sheet has been filed in Saket court against Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student ‘Sharjeel Imam’ for giving ‘seditious speech’ and ‘abetting riots’ in Jamia on 15 December, 2019 last year.
‘In the case of FIR no. 242/19 PS New Friends colony, Sharjeel Imam was arrested for instigating and abetting the Jamia riots, due to his seditious speech delivered on 13 December, 2019. During the investigation, on the basis of evidence collected, sections 124 A IPC and 153 A IPC (Sedition and promoting enmity) were invoked in the case. In this case, the first charge sheet was filed against the rioters arrested by the SIT led by Shri Rajesh Deo.
A supplementary charge sheet in continuation of the earlier charge-sheet has now been filed in the court of MM Saket court’, said the Delhi Police. According to the police, the riots broke out as the result of the protest march organised by the Jamia students against the Citizenship Amendment Act in the area of New Friends Colony and Jamia in December last year.
Delhi Police also added that the mob indulged in large scale rioting, stole-pelting and arson, and in the process destroyed many publics and private properties. Cases of rioting, arson and damage to public properties were registered in both the police stations. Many policemen and public persons were injured in the riots. Sharjeel who gained the media and public attention through the ‘Shahen Bagh’ protest, was arrested from Bihar’s Jehanabad on January 28 this year.
Responding to the allegations and charge-sheet filed by the Delhi Police, Sharjeel Imam’s lawyer Ahmad Ibrahim spoke, they have not gone through the complete charge sheet that was filed on 17th April 2020 by Delhi Police. After going through it, they will take the appropriate measures: Sharjeel Imam's lawyer Ahmad Ibrahim.
Imam was arrested for instigating and provoking Jamia riots by his seditious speech delivered on 13th December. He has been alleged that his speech has led to riots in and around Delhi's Jamia Mila Islamia University on 15th December 2019.
On the basis of evidence collected Sections 124 A IPC and 153 A IPC (Sedition and promoting enmity between classes) were invoked in the case. A supplementary chargesheet has now been filed in the Saket court.
On 15th December, riots broke out against the Citizenship Amendment Act in consequence to the protest march organised by students of Jamia Millia Islamia University . The mob indulged in large-scale rioting, stone pelting and arson and in the process destroyed many public and private properties. Cases of rioting, arson and damage to public properties were registered. Many policemen and public persons were injured in the riots.
Sharjeel Imam who was also involved in Shaheen Bagh protest was arrested from Bihar's Jehanabad on January 28 in a separate case for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at the Jamia Millia Islamia University here and in Aligarh. A case had been registered against him on sedition and other charges on January 26 in this regard.
