Gangubai Kathiawadi Day 1 Box Office Collection: Alia Bhatt Starrer Registers Decent Opening Numbers

Gangubai Kathiawadi, featuring Alia Bhatt in the title role, was released in Indian theatres on Friday. The film is estimated to earn between 9.50 to 10 crore rupees at the domestic box office. Alia even went the Galaxy theatre in Khar late Friday to see how the film was received, and she was swamped by fans when she greeted them from her car with her Gangubai-style namaste. 

Gangubai Kathiawadi performed well on its opening day, with collections expected to be in the ₹9.50-10 crore net as the film performed well in the Mumbai circuit. The opening day collections in the Mumbai circuit could approach or exceed 83, which was a much larger film.

The film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was also shown at the Berlin Film Festival prior to its release. 'Alia puts on quite a spectacular display,' wrote the Hindustan Times in its review of the picture. 'Her virtually faultless diction, dialect, mannerisms, and the way she emotes fury, rage, happiness, and helplessness leave you speechless.', it added.

Gangubai Kathiawadi is based on one of the chapters of Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai and depicts Alia's character's journey from a helpless teenager pushed into the sex trade to a brothel owner and ultimately a matriarch who desires to enter politics.
