Bollywood Movies OTT Release Date: Big Update For Future Digital Releases
Bollywood Movies OTT Release Date

The 'new normal' post-pandemic resulted in major shifts in movie consumption patterns. With cinemas closed, numerous films were released exclusively on digital channels. When theatres reopened, there was concern that it would take some time for the industry to recover. As a result, the directors made the decision to distribute their films on OTT four weeks after they were premiered in theatres. Now, there's a huge update about Bollywood movies OTT release date.

Bollywood Movies OTT Release Date: The eight-week rule was previously followed. The four-week window restriction was agreed upon by all parties, including exhibitors, due to streaming giants paying more for films that premiere on their platforms as soon as possible following the theatrical release. The concept was that because the producers were suffering from lesser box office earnings, they should be compensated by presenting their films early online.

However, in recent months, cinemas have been running at full capacity everywhere. Many films did make money, demonstrating that the industry is recovering. As a result, the various stakeholders have chosen to stick to the original agreement of distributing the films online only eight weeks following their theatrical debut.

The aforementioned rule will go into force on August 1. This means that all films that will be released in theatres starting next months, such as Raksha Bandhan, Laal Singh Chaddha, Liger, Brahmastra, and others, would be available on OTT after eight weeks in theatres.

In the pre-pandemic era, a few directors attempted to distribute their films online before spending eight weeks in theatres. They did, however, have to deal with certain difficulties. The Rajkummar Rao-starrer Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017) and Vikram Bhatt's horror film 1921 (2018) were both delayed on multiplexes because their producers did not want to adhere to the eight-week rule. The screenings of these films began in the afternoon on the day of release, only after they informed multiplexes that their film will be available on OTT in eight weeks.
